Grammar Points 1 – 조동사 might: ~할지[일지]도 몰라 / ~ 일수도 있어

* 조동사 might/could/should/would는 문맥의 시제에 따라 단순하게 may/can/shall/will의 단순 과거형으로 쓰이기도 하지만 시제와 무관하게 가능성, 추측, 제안, 조언, 요청, 능력 등을 표현하는 용법으로도 많이 사용하니 주의하세요.

* ‘could’를 사용해서 현재와 미래의 가능성/예상/예측에 대해서 이야기할 수 있습니다. 단, 일반적 사실에 근거한 경우 혹은 자신의 경험이나 지식을 통해 더 확신이 있는 경우에는 ‘could’ 대신 ‘can’을 사용합니다. 예) It can/could be cold in Spain this time of year.
* could와 might는 모두 확실치 않은 가능성/예상/예측에 대해서 이야기 할 때 쓰지만, could는 might보다 좀 더 높은 가능성을 나타내기에, 문장에 따라서 다르게 사용됩니다.
* 가능성/추측/예측의 의미로 사용할 때의 ‘could’의 부정문은 ‘might not’을 사용합니다. ‘could not(couldn’t)은 부정의 확신 (~일 리가 없다)을 유의하세요. 예) He could’t be wrong.

6. 요약
will으로 제안하는 문장을 말할 때, 맨 뒤에 if you want / if you like 등을 붙여서 상대가 원할 때의 의미를 추가할 수 있다.
확실하게 거절할 때 will을 사용해서 말할 수 있다. I won’t stay in Peter’s house.
may의 과거인 might는 ~할지[일지]도 몰라의 의미를 가진다. can과 비슷하지만 가능성이 희박할 때 사용한다.
might의 부정인 might not은 축약하지 않는다.
can의 과거인 could도 might와 비슷하게 ~일지도 몰라의 의미를 가진다. might보다는 높은 가능성을 가진다.
could not은 ~일 리가 없다라는 확신의 의미이므로 could의 부정을 말할 때는 might not의 표현을 쓴다.

B: Oh… I brought the my car today. I’ll use public transportation, if it snows today.
A: Good. A traffic accident might happen on a snowy day.

9. 느낀점
may의 과거형인 might를 통해서 ~할지도 몰라, ~ 일수도 있어의 표현을 할 수 있다. 이 표현을 가능성이 낮은 말을 할 때 사용한다. 가능성이 높은, 확실한 미래를 말할 때는 조동사 will을 사용한다. might의 부정은 축약형이 없다. can의 과거인 could도 might와 비슷한 의미로 사용되는데, could는 가능성이 might보다는 높은 문장을 말할 때 사용한다. could not은 확실한 부정을 나타내기 때문에 부정을 말할 때는 could도 might not을 사용하는 것이 좋다. 예전에 배울 때는 might, could, would 등등 확률을 가지고 말하는 회화표현들이 정말 헷갈렸는데, 이번에는 예전에 배웠을 때보다 더 잘 이해되는 것 같다. 이런 표현을 눈으로 보기보다 직접 말을 해봐야 익숙해질 것 같다.
