Mission 25 Complete – Talk about problems.
Review Skills 71-72
When I left Korea and came to Canada, I was only 13 years old. Everything seemed strange and different to me. I had to learn everything from scratch. It was so hard for me to learn English when I first came to Canada. I wasn’t able to speak or understand any English words at first. I couldn’t understand my teachers, so it was impossible for me to do well in school. But on the bright side, thanks to my inability to speak and understand English, I had a chance to experience some funny situations my first year.
I still remember the first day of school. My first class was computer science. I walked in the classroom and sat on an empty chair next to a friendly-looking boy. As I sat on the chair, the boy looked directly at me and said “Hey, what’s up?” As soon as he said that, I panicked. All I could understand was the word ‘up’ I thought that he wanted me to stand up and find another seat. So, I stood up, said “I am sorry”, and moved somewhere else. I can never forget the confused and puzzled look on his face. Later, when I found out that he was just saying hi, I laughed so hard. It is a funny story I often tell my friends.
