관계대명사
1. 주격
who / that (사람)
I met a girl. The girl is from Australia.
-> I met a girl who (that) is from Australia.
which / that (사물)
She bought a bag from a store. The store is near her house.
-> She bought a bag from a store that (which) is near her house.
2. 목적격
whom / that (사람)
The lady is my mentor. We met the lady in the park.
-> The lady whom (that) we met in the park is my mentor.
which / that (사물)
My mother bought a couch a few years ago. This is the couch.
-> This is the couch which (that) my mother bought a few years ago.
3. 소유격
whose : I have a friend. My friend’s sister lives in Egypt.
-> I have a friend whose sister lives in Egypt.
4. 설명 대상 포함
what : This is the thing. I like the thing.
-> This is what I like.
That camera is the thing. I want to buy the thing.
-> That camera is what I want to buy.
(the thing이 what 안에 포함됨)
설명 대상이 사람 / 사물인지, 뒤에 오는 문장 (관계대명사절)에서 주어 / 목적어 / 소유격으로 쓰였는지에 따라 ‘관계대명사’의 형태가 달라진다.
예외1. : 항상 that을 쓰는 경우
1. 설명 대상이 사람 + 사물
It’s a movie about a a man and his dog that lived on an Island.
2. 설명 대상이 최상급 / 서수 / some / any / every / the only 등으로 한정된 경우
It was the only book that she ever wrote.
3. 의문사가 있는 문장 : Who’s the guy that you were talking to in the library?
예외2 : 관계대명사를 생략하는 경우
1. 주격관계대명사 + be 동사 : I walked in the park (which is) not far from my house.
2. 목적격관계대명사 : This is the girl (that / whom) I talked about.
자주 쓰이는 재귀대명사 표현들
1. 전치사 + 재귀대명사
by oneself 홀로 My teacher lives by himself.
for oneself 혼자 힘으로 That little boy had to do it for himself.
of oneself 제 스스로 He takes care of himself.
to oneslef 자기만의 He kept the secret to himself.
beside oneself 정신나간 Jeff is beside himself.
2. 동사 + 재귀대명사
behave onself 예의바르게 행동하다 You have to behave yourself.
help oneself 마음껏 먹가 Help yourself.
suit yourself 마음대로 하다 I don’t care. Suit yourself.
wear oneself out 지치다 You’ll soon wear yourself out.
lock oneself out 열쇠를 안에 두고 문을 잠그다.
Jack locked himself out again.
for + 동명사 / to 부정사로 물건의 용도 표현하기.
1. 일상 / 일반적 용도 : for + 동명사 / to 부정사 모두 가능
I use my phone for texting / to text my friends.
He uses his laptop for writing / to write his book.
2. 특정 / 일회성 용도 : to 부정사만 가능
I used Jenny’s phone to text my mother because I lost my phone.
Susan sometimes uses my laptop to write to her daughter. - 응용 문장 :
I met a boy. The boy has a teddy bear.
-> I met a boy who has a teddy bear.
I bought a hat yesterday. This is the hat.
-> This is the hat which (that) I bought yesterday.
I know the girl. I helped the girl at the mountain.
-> I know the girl whom I helped at the mountain.
I have a friend. My friend’s dress is black.
-> I have a friend whose dress is black.
This bike is thing. I will buy this bike.
-> This bike is what I’ll buy.
My friend lives by herself.
He taught himself to play the piano.
The baby plays of himself.
She will suit herself.
I’m beside myself.
I use my chopsticks for eating / to eat food.
I use my cellphone to study / for studying Mini study.
I use the juicer to make tomato juice.
Please, can you turn the fan on?

- 느낀점 : 42주차 학습을 했다. 이번 주차엔 관계대명사를 사용한 물건 / 사람을 구체적으로 설명하기, 재귀대명사 – self / – selves 를 이용한 다양한 표현 활용하기, 전자제품의 용도에 대해 ‘for + 동명사 / to 부정사’ 로 표현하기, 그리고 기기조작에 대해 말하기를 공부했다. 평소 ‘관계대명사’는 많이 쓰는 부분인데 혼동되는 경우가 있었다. 읽을 수는 있지만 말을 할 때는 헷갈리고, 특히 목적격이나 소유격을 말하기가 어렵고 자신이 없어서 쉽게 말하지 못했다. 그래서 이번에 확실하게 다지는 느낌으로 공부에 임했고, 정리가 되어 재밌게 느껴지기까지 했다. 미니팝스 #73은 Lady Gaga의 ‘Stupid Love’였다. 사회운동가이며 배우기고, 음악가인 그녀는 모두가 좋아하고 인정하는 천재적인 아티스트다. 다만, 그녀의 파격적인 의상과 퍼포먼스 때문에 논란이 종종 있다. 음악은 기분 좋게 활력을 느끼게 해주는 곡이었다. 이번주는 학습일지를 쓰다가 다 날아가서 다시 처음부터 썼다. 눈물이 앞을 가린다. ㅠㅠ…
